Nan Cunningham is possessed of a distinctly Southern voice, with a universal appeal that has brought her national attention. She is not bound by, but yet she fulfills, the meaning of the over-used moniker: regional artist.
She is a teller of tales, a transformer of light, and a lens through which we are transported from the present moment to a realm where time is suspended. Her personal presence and uncanny ability to translate emotion through light, color, form, and story give voice and feeling to her painting.
An Auburn University graduate, Cunningham is a faculty member of Arrowmont School, Armory Learning Arts Center, Third Street Painters Workshop, and the Alabama Art Education Center. She has mounted more than a dozen one-person shows and presents workshops both regionally and nationally.
